Hearing loss
Over eight million people in the UK, young and old, have some kind of hearing deficiency. There are many causes – from a simple build up of wax or a damaged eardrum, to a natural deterioration in hearing as we get older.
Poor hearing can affect every aspect of everyday life. Whether you’re out with friends, in a business meeting, crossing the road or driving the car, clear and accurate hearing is vital, and until there’s a problem it’s easy to take it for granted. Hearing loss can also cause emotional, physical and mental stress if untreated.

How’s your hearing?
Here’s a simple first step towards identifying hearing problems. Answer the following 9 questions:
- 1. I sometimes feel people aren’t speaking clearly
- 2. I sometimes miss parts of a conversation
- 3. I sometimes answer a question incorrectly
- 4. I hear better when I am facing whoever’s talking
- 5. I can feel frustrated and isolated when in company
- 6. I have difficulty hearing TV and radio
- 7. I have the TV and radio on louder than the rest of my family
- 8. I sometimes/often have to ask who’s talking to repeat things
- 9. I can hear some voices more clearly than others
